THE LIFE & LEGACY OF REV. FRED SMITH
Born to Burrell Smith & Luvenia Gibson Smith 07/21/1925. Fred was an only child. Both of his parents preceded him in death.
Fred attended Forrestville Grammer School and graduated from DuSable High School in 1962. Shortly after graduation, Fred enlisted in the US Army Air Force from 1943-1946. This was during WWII. He was Honorably Discharged as a Technician 5th Grade.
Fred and Mary were united in Holy Wedlock in 1948. Two children were born daughter, Aleyna D. Smith-Lerner, and a son, Markus Smith who preceded him in death.
Fred was one of the 1st African Americans to be hired at the Stockyards Meat Slaughter House.
Rev. Fred was ordained into the ministry, along with his life-long friend, Rev. Edward Rockett.
Rev. Smith, Rev. Rockett and Deacon Hartwell forged a friendship that lasted more than 50+ years.
Fred joined Greater Shiloh MB Church in 2003, under the Leadership of Rev. Eddie C.Redmond. Fred was very instrumental in teaching Sunday School and Bible Study. Fred was always encouraging people with God’s Word to everyone he met.
Fred, lived life in the 3rd Ward of Chicago. Due to failing health Fred lived in the Calumet Senior Apartment, never locking his door. Special friend Wanda was a daily visitor. As Rev. Smith's illness progressed and he was moved to Alden Princeton Rehab Center, he expressed how great staff treated him and about his meals being delicious and “Too Much Food.”
Rev. Fred Smith leaves fond memories to his best friend, Deacon Walter Hartwell, his Greater Shiloh MB Church family, staff of Calumet Senior Apartments, staff of Alden Princeton Rehab Facility and many more throughout his life.
